Seneca Village Community Conversation
What was Seneca Village and why is it important? What does its history and legacy mean to you?
To a modern-day visitor, the site of Seneca Village resembles much of the surrounding Central Park landscape, with rolling hills, rock outcrops, and playgrounds. But what many do not realize is that this area—near the Park’s perimeter from West 82nd to West 89th Street—has an exceptional history. During the first half of the 19th century, before the area became Central Park, it was home to a predominantly Black community, many of whom owned property.
Seneca Village’s historic presence in Central Park provides a unique opportunity to honor the people that lived in what is now one of the most celebrated public spaces in the world. For nearly 30 years, both the Central Park Conservancy and New-York Historical Society have worked to uncover this vibrant community and unearth its history.
In partnership, we are now moving forward with a long-term, community-informed project to emphasize the enduring physical features of the site, highlight its history, and honor the memory and significance of Seneca Village.
To kick off this work, we want to hear from the public and invite you to join us for our first Community Conversation to discuss what resonates with you. This event will offer our friends and neighbors a forum to learn about the history of Seneca Village and current initiatives to amplify the community’s story. There will also be opportunities to participate in free tours led by Central Park Conservancy staff as we delve into the meaning and legacy of this space.
Complimentary morning refreshments, lunch, and children’s activities will be provided.
This event is free to attend, but pre-registration is required.
